Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Expresión Económica. Revista de Análisis

Expresión Económica. Revista de Análisis has adopted policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the publication process that are aligned with the guidelines of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). The objective is to ensure transparency, accountability, and ethics in the production of scientific knowledge.

The Journal’s Position

The journal Expresión Económica. Revista de Análisis recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools are part of the current scientific production landscape and that their use can support the research and academic writing process. However, the journal considers that the use of this tool must be under the author’s control and responsibility, never the other way around. The use of AI is a support tool, not a substitute for human intellectual creativity, and its use must be transparently disclosed at all times.

Use of AI by Authors

  • General Principles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is defined as any computational system capable of producing text, images, data, code, or other content based on user instructions.

The use of these tools must be based on the following guidelines:

  • The use of AI is permitted throughout the creative process, provided that it is explicitly declared.
  • AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors of an article.
  • Their use must be clearly stated in the Methods section, along with a description of how they were used. Any other details regarding their use must be declared in the statement of originality.
  • Authors must commit to making informed and responsible use of AI tools.
  • Authors are responsible for safeguarding their own intellectual property and that of others, protecting their personal data, and safeguarding the privacy and identity of participants.
  • Authors must be familiar with the tool’s policies and ensure that, by using it, they are not transferring rights to the work to the company that created the tool.

Mandatory Declaration

  1. When submitting the use of AI for evaluation, authors must indicate the following, individually, in the Statement of Originality:
  • At what stages of the research it was employed
  • In which part of the text it was used
  • For what purposes it was used
  • Which tool and which version

Permitted Uses

The following are considered permitted uses of AI, provided they are properly declared and enhance creative activity without replacing the author’s intellectual agency.

  • Writing: The use of AI is permitted to assist with writing tasks such as grammar correction or stylistic improvement. Its use to generate text or to present such text as one’s own without explicit disclosure is not permitted. If AI is used to draft sections of the manuscript, authors must indicate this in the Methods section, specifying the tool and version used.
  • Figures and tables: The use of AI to generate, modify, or enhance figures, tables, or images must be disclosed in the methods section in the corresponding figure caption. The presentation of AI-generated figures or images without a clear description of their origin is not permitted. Authors are responsible for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of visual content, as well as ensuring that images have not been manipulated in a way that affects the study’s data or results.
  • References: The use of AI to locate and organize bibliographic references is permitted, provided that authors verify the existence, accuracy, and relevance of each cited source. Since AI systems can generate non-existent references, it is the author’s responsibility to verify that each cited reference exists.

Responsibility

The intellectual, ethical, and legal responsibility for the published work rests at all times and exclusively with the authors, not with the journal or its publishing institution.

Sanctions for Undeclared AI Use

If an author falsely claims not to have used AI and this is detected during the peer review process or after publication, the author will be notified via a formal warning.

The author must correct the text and transparently indicate the use of AI in the revised version.

Disputes arising from these cases will be resolved in accordance with COPE guidelines, and additional sources may be consulted as they become available. In any such case, the editorial committee will be notified, involved in resolving these disputes, and will make the final decisions with the appropriate institutional support.

Use of AI by the Editorial Team

The editorial team may use AI tools to support administrative and editorial management tasks, in order to streamline tasks in which its members have experience, so that the result can be supervised, reviewed, and approved. Responsibility for this will lie entirely with the person performing the task.

Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers (peer reviewers) must conduct their evaluations personally, directly, and independently, basing their judgments on their own expert knowledge, academic experience, and critical reading.

In this regard, the use of artificial intelligence systems, tools, or applications —in any form— for the full or partial preparation of verdicts, comments, observations, recommendations, or any other input is strictly prohibited.
