Abstract

The literature on environmental economics, and since 1989 on ecological economics, has been increasing as environmental problems become more acute and climate change becomes more incisive in contemporary economies. There is no doubt that the relationship between the human system and the ecological system is extremely close, and the problems generated in the former have repercussions in the latter and vice versa. Thus, from a systemic perspective, ecological economics from its beginnings has been providing a biophysical approach to better understand the above intersystemic relationship, in order to optimally implement economic-ecological policies that facilitate the generation of sustainable economic development.
