Abstract

Mexico is fighting a head-on battle against Florida, USA, the main competitor for the U.S. fresh vegetable market, as well as against a booming Canada, its other NAFTA partner and the second most serious competitor in that market, and finally against Spain and Holland. These countries base their competition on offering the U.S. market an overwhelmingly greenhouse horticultural product, so it is urgent that our country: 1) seeks to generalize this very important technology to replace those abysmally unproductive techniques such as open-air and shadehouse; 2) controls its supply of protected and open-air agriculture, since the lack of planning has led to a drop in producer prices.
